DOCTORS, LAWYERS, NATIVE MINISTERS, COLLEGE GRADUATES

DOCTORS

The early history of the medical fraternity in Goffstown is, to a great degree, shrouded in obscurity; little or no record is to be found of some of the early practitioners; and of those with whose names our fathers were familiar, the Lethean waves of oblivion have for so many years rolled over their records, that by the present generation they are forgotten, or nearly so.

Dr. Carr, in the "History of Hillsborough County," in speaking of the early settlers says: "Mrs. Walker, wife of Alexander Walker, the old town clerk, extracts teeth, and is the obstetrician of the settlement." There are legendary stories of her extracting teeth for her neighbors, and if all reports are to be credited her dentistry did not afford an especially painless amusement.

Who the earliest practicing physicians in Goffstown were is a matter of doubt.

Dr. John Cushing was practicing in Goffstown in 1784. See genealogical record.
Dr. Joseph Black. Nothing can be learned concerning him, save September 18, 1793, he was licensed to keep a house of public entertainment.
Dr. Jonathan Gove came to Goffstown in 1794, resided where Benjamin F. Blaisdell and Dr. Charles F. George subsequently lived; he died March 21, 1818. See genealogical record.
Dr. David L. Morril. See genealogical record.
Dr. John Stevens. See genealogical record.
Dr. Peter P. Woodbury was born in Francestown August 8, 1791; studied medicine with Dr. Jonathan Gove of Goffstown; practiced medicine in Goffstown from January 9, 1815, to July 3, 1815, when he removed to Bedford, where he ever afterwards resided; he died there December 5, 1860. See "Bedford History," p. 448 and 1121.
Dr. Ebenezer Stevens. See genealogical record.
   Dr. Wright.

Dr. Silas Walker, son of Silas and Hannah (Griffin) Walker, was born in Goffstown March 3, 1780; married Sarah Dinsmore; their children were John Dinsmore, Harriet, Silas, Rachel, James, Charles and Sarah.
Dr. Walker practiced medicine in Warner a short time, settling in what is called Warner Lower Village in 1810; was in Goffstown until 1826; afterward removed to Bedford, where he practiced until 1827, when he moved to Piscataquog Village; he was a remarkably skilled practitioner, and his services were in especial demand in critical cases; Dartmouth College conferred the degree of M. D. upon him in 1842; he died 1843.
Dr. Ziba Adams. See genealogical record.
Dr. Daniel Little. See genealogical record.
Dr. Moses Long was born in Hopkinton; from "Concord History" we learn the following: Commenced practice in Concord, 1813, where he resided until 1824; practiced three or four years in Hopkinton and Goffstown, and in 1829 removed from Goffstown to Warner; afterwards to Rochester, N. Y., where he was engaged with his brother in bridge construction. His wife, Rebecca, died January 20, 1823, aged 36 years, accidently poisoned by white lead being used in the family.
Dr. David Flanders practiced in Goffstown in 1830; his stay in town was probably short; he afterward practiced in Londonderry; was accidently killed in Glover, Vt., from an accident on account of defective highway.
Dr. Asa Crosby was born in Milford July 15, 1765, son of Capt. Josiah and Sarah (Fitch) Crosby; married, 1789, Betsey Hoyt of Sandwich, daughter of Nathan and Molly (Page) Hoyt; practiced medicine in Sandwich for thirty-one years, and removed to Gilmanton in 1816 where he remained until 1832, when he moved to Goffstown and resided upon the southerly side of the river, and in 1834 took up his residence in Hanover where he died April 12, 1836; while a resident of Sandwich he represented the town successively for eleven years in the General Court; Dartmouth College conferred the honorary degree of M. D. upon him in 1811. His father was born in Billerica, Mass., in 1730; he was a descendant of Simon and Ann Crosby, who came to America from England in 1635 in the ship Susan and Elyn; Simon died in 1639, four years after his arrival, leaving a widow 29 years of age, and three boys.

LAWYERS WHO PRACTICED IN GOFFSTOWN

For many of the following sketches reference was made to The Bench and Bar, by Charles H. Bell, and Lawyers of Goffstown, by Hon. David A. Taggart in the Granite Monthly, May, 1890:

JOHN GOVE, eldest son of Dr. Jonathan and Mary (Hubbard) Gove, was born in New Boston February 17, 1771. His father came to Goffstown from New Boston in 1794, where he gained a widespread reputation as a physician and polished gentleman. John graduated from Dartmouth in the class of 1793; read law with William Gordon of Amherst; was admitted to the bar September, 1796. He was the first lawyer to settle in Goffstown, where he remained until about 1802, when he removed to Chillicothe, Ohio, where he died, unmarried, in 1802.

THOMAS JAMESON, son of Hugh and Christine (Whitehead) Jameson, was born in Dunbarton May, 1771; his parents emigrated from Ulster, Londonderry County, in Ireland, in 1746, and first settled in Londonderry, and subsequently moved to Dunbarton, and located upon the farm which was for many years in the Jameson family, afterwards known as the George Ryder farm. His early ancestors were Scotch, emigrating to Ireland from Argyleshire, Scotland, and are said to have taken a part in the defense of Londonderry, Ireland, during the siege of 1689. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1797, and was admitted to the bar in 1803, studying his profession with Baruch Chase of Hopkinton; he practiced law in Goffstown from 1803 to the time of his decease June 10, 1813; he married Isabella McGaw, born October 5, 1777, daughter of Robert and Martha (Means) McGaw and resided where Charles B. Carr now lives in Goffstown Village.

JOSIAH FORSAITH, son of Dea. William and Jane (Wilson) Forsaith, was born in Deering, December 14, 1780; graduated from Dartmouth College in the class of 1807, in the same class with Jonathan Aiken. He was honored by his townspeople by election to office, and represented Newport in the legislature; was financially successful in his profession; married October 6, 1822, Maria Southworth of Hingham, Mass., and to them five children were born.

JONATHAN AIKEN, son of James and Elizabeth (Pinkerton) Aiken, was born in Londonderry June 19, 1784; graduated from Dartmouth College in the class of 1807, and studied law in the office of Josiah Forsaith. It is said of him that he was unable to gain a living by the practice of his profession, and he engaged in teaching. He taught in Georgetown, D. C., Fairfax, and Loudoun Counties, Virginia, where he died August 2, 1857; was mentioned as an excellent scholar and successful instructor.
