BRASS BANDS

The first band was organized in Goffstown, in the fall of 1856, and was known as the Goffstown Cornet Band. At the time of its organization, or later, the following persons were members:

They met for practice in the halls of G. Byron Moore and Deacon Joseph Hadley; the former in the store buildlng of Parker Brothers, and the latter in the store building located on the site of the residence of Mrs. Joseph Whittemore.

After Mr. Walker resigned as leader and moved from town, Albert Kidder acted as leader. They played at political gatherings, celebrations, entertainments, etc. At the celebration, July 5, 1858, held at what was known as Steele's Grove, on land now owned by Walter Clement, near the mouth of the Whittle Brook, the band furnished music for the day. They disbanded in the fall of 1869.

The next band in Goffstown was known as Stark's Cornet Band, and was organized about 1874. It was named in honor of the leader, Lewis Henry Stark, who took an especial interest in its success. The members of Stark's Cornet Band at the organization were as follows:

Stark's Cornet Band was a fine musical organization; they played at celebrations, political meetings, entertainments, etc., and their services were in especial demand upon many occasions. The band had a successful existence for many years, and the citizens of Goffstown took a great interest in it. They disbanded in 1900. It was reorganized August 25, 1916, under the name of Goffstown Cadet Band, by Frank M. Conner, and by him directed until February, 1917, when Leonard K. Belcher was secured as director and leader.
