Notes for John William Shackford: "In the late eighteenth century Orange Grove was known as Old Place.... Old Place belonged to the Tunstalls at the end of the eighteenth century, and was sold in 1796 to Humphrey Temple of Chatham Hill and his wife Susannah Walker. From then it passed to their daughter Mary, wife of Hezekiah McLelland.... The McLelland's daughter Martha married the Reverend John Shackford in 1846, and spent her life in this home, which she and her husband renamed Orange Grove....He was also a circuit rider [Methodist circuit---mentioned earlier in the passage], and had come to King and Queen from Dover, New Hampshire. He was pastor of Shepherd's Church in 1860 when the present brick building was erected, and preached the first sermon from its pulpit when it was ready for use in May.... The Shackfords suffered much tragedy in the Civil War years. Their seventeen-year-old son was killed at the battle of Five Forks and his body was never found.... At Orange Grove four of the younger children, a son and three daughters, died of scarlet fever.... After the war a near-tragedy occurred when Mr. Shackford, having decided to turn the old outside kitchen into a workshop, contrived andirons out of two long shells thought to be duds. Just after his wife had called him in to dinner they exploded, interrupting his blessing and blowing out the end of his workshop. Husband and wife both died in 1900, and their son William, a doctor, lived at Orange Grove with his wife, a McLelland cousin. Joseph Shackford followed his father's profession and became a noted preacher and educator in the county. He built a house across a field from his parents' home and called it Peach Blow." Reverend. Kept a diary! "The eastern horizon was softly tinted with the glow of the coming sunlight, and the clouds were all gone from the sky. Rapidly the early hours passed away, and at 8-1/2 A.M. I found myself in a carriage approaching the 'Ridley Place.' The rest of the bridal party soon assembled in the parlor, where we exchanged a few salutations, and friendly words suited to the occasion, and then all started for the church...."[Here he inserts a newspaper announcement of his marriage] "to Miss Cora Kingsbury of Oxford, eldest daughter of T. B. Kingsbury, Esq.".... "So the first day of our married life has passed away. It has been one calm sweet day, as serene and beautiful as if Nature had specifically adorned it for our bridal. O Spirit divine, direct through the time to come the footsteps of these two young immortal beings in holy wedlock joined today! Help each to help the other, and may the favor of the Holy Trinity abide upon our heads while we live in the world!" (Rev Joseph Wesley's diary per Carolyn J.
